What will it really cost?

Pick a device: price, the refills its maker says you need, and the plan, added up over 1 to 3 years.

Cheapest first, store price of November 7, 2026.

1 = the brand's interval. 2 = twice as often, for example with two cats if you assume use doubles (our assumption, not the brand's).

Filled with the brand's figure; type your own, or one where the brand gives none.

Leave empty to use the published price.

Furbo Nanny, Petcube Care, Whisker+, Petlibro Video Cloud.

Paw Ledger is meant to be paid through affiliate links: if you buy through a link to a brand store, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. No program has accepted the site yet, and a commission never decides a pick or an order. How we choose.

A self-cleaning litter box, a smart feeder or a treat camera has two prices: the one on the box, and the one you keep paying. Liners, carbon filters, crystal trays, fountain filters, desiccant packs, camera plans and GPS memberships are all printed somewhere on the brand's own store, with how often the brand says to replace them. Paw Ledger reads those pages and adds the lines up, the way you would in a ledger.

How we work. We have not bought or tested any of these devices. On November 7, 2026 we read the U.S. stores of 11 brands, quoted each figure with its page, and wrote "not published" where a figure is missing. Our arithmetic is marked [calc]. Every refill is counted at the interval its maker publishes, which you can change in the calculator. Full method: how we compare.

How we compare: criteria, sources and dates

2. Litter boxes: the box is the small part

A crystal-tray box such as the PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Classic costs $99.95, then one disposable tray a month: PetSafe sells them at $73.49 for three and says one tray serves "a single cat for up to a month". Over three years that is 36.5 trays, about $894 [calc], nine times the box. At the other end, a Litter-Robot 4 costs $699 and then about $97 a year in liners and carbon filters at Whisker's own intervals [calc]. The cheapest three-year total in our check is not the cheapest box: see how much a self-cleaning litter box costs and the best self-cleaning litter box by need.

3. Feeders: hopper size, kibble size, and who eats

Most dry-food feeders publish a kibble size range: 2 to 15 mm on every Petlibro Granary page, up to 0.47 in (12 mm) on PETKIT's, 5/8 in or less on Whisker's Feeder-Robot. Hoppers run from 3 L to 32 cups. Two cats can share a dual-bowl feeder, or each get an RFID feeder that opens only for its own tag: automatic cat feeder for 2 cats.

4. Fountains: the filter decides the running cost

Petlibro says to replace its Dockstream filters every 2 weeks, CATLINK every 2 months, PETKIT every 30 days in normal mode. Bought at the brands' own pack prices, that puts a Petlibro filter at about $98 a year, a PETKIT filter at about $49 and a CATLINK filter at about $32 [calc]. The fountain table is in the full comparison.

5. Cameras and GPS trackers: read the plan

Furbo sells its 360° Dog Camera at $184 alone, or $54 when you take a yearly Furbo Nanny plan billed at $83.92 the first year and $7.99 a month after that. Petcube's Bites 2 Lite is $99.99 with Petcube Care from $4.99 a month on a yearly plan. GPS trackers all need a plan, and only Halo printed a price we could read: Furbo vs Petcube, dog GPS tracker with no subscription.

6. Two tools that do the sums

The 3-year cost calculator adds up any device over one to three years, with your own replacement pace. Which one fits my pet checks your cat's or dog's weight, the number of pets, kibble size and neck size against every published limit, and tells you when a brand simply does not say.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a self-cleaning litter box cost per year?

It depends far more on the refills than on the box. With each brand's own replacement intervals for one cat, the first year in our check runs from $224.94 (CATLINK Scooper Open-X, $199 plus waste bags) to $1,096.33 (Litter-Robot 5 Pro, $999 plus liners and carbon filters) [calc]. Crystal-tray boxes are cheap to buy but cost $298 a year in trays alone: one $24.50 tray a month [calc].

Do smart pet devices need a subscription?

Most work without one, with fewer features. Every dog GPS tracker we read needs a paid plan (Halo says a Pack Membership Plan is required for every collar, from $9.99 a month). Cameras and litter boxes sell optional plans: Furbo Nanny, Petcube Care, Whisker+, Petlibro Video Cloud AI. Our cost tool counts required plans always and optional ones only if you tick them.

Which brands do you cover?

Whisker (Litter-Robot), Petlibro, PetSafe, CATLINK, PETKIT, Neakasa, Furbo, Petcube, Halo, Fi and PetLink, read on their own U.S. stores on November 7, 2026. Tractive is missing: its store showed us euro prices only. See what else is missing on our method page.

Have you tested these devices?

No. We have not bought or used any of them. We read what each brand publishes (price, limits, refill intervals, plan prices), quote it with the date, and do the arithmetic. Results marked [calc] are our own math.
