The needs come from what American cat owners type into Google: for multiple cats, for large cats, for one cat, under $200, for odor control. We left odor out: every brand claims it, none publishes a comparable figure.

How we compare: criteria, sources and dates
One cat, each brand's replacement interval, no optional plan, litter you already buy left out. "n/p items" means a refill the brand sells without saying how long it lasts: those boxes cannot be ranked honestly and are listed with what we know.
Three questions before you buy
1. Is your cat inside the published weight range?
Ranges run from 2.2 lb (Petlibro Luma's minimum) to 33 lb (PetSafe OpenSky, Neakasa M1). Kittens are a separate case: Petlibro and PETKIT both say to turn automatic cleaning off under 6 months. Check your cat in the fit tool.
2. Which refills does it lock you into?
Three kinds of running cost: ordinary clumping litter plus a liner or bag (Whisker, Petlibro, CATLINK, PETKIT, Neakasa, PetSafe SmartSpin), a proprietary crystal tray (PetSafe Crystal Classic, Plus and Smart; PETKIT Crystal Duo), or a proprietary bagging ring (PETKIT Purobot Ultra). Whisker says you can use "any bag that fits in the waste drawer", though readings may be off with a dark bag; PETKIT says its Ultra needs its "exclusive refill rings".
3. Do you need the app or the camera?
None of these boxes needs a plan to clean. Plans add history and video: Whisker+ $79.90 a year (one year included with the Litter-Robot 5 Pro), Petlibro Video Cloud AI $95.99 a year for the Luma. CATLINK's Scoop Robot Pro page says its camera features come with "no subscriptions or hidden fees".

What is the best self-cleaning litter box for multiple cats?
Only Whisker publishes how many cats each model is rated for: up to 2 for the Litter-Robot EVO, 4 for the Litter-Robot 4, 5 for the Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro. The cheapest rated for 4 or more is the Litter-Robot 4 at $699. Other brands give waste capacity for one cat (CATLINK Open-X: up to 15 days, PETKIT Max 3: up to 15 days) or, like Petlibro's Luma, for two ("up to 7 days of waste for 2 cats"), but no maximum number of cats.
What is the best self-cleaning litter box for large cats?
On published maximum weights: PetSafe ScoopFree OpenSky and Neakasa M1 Plus and M1 Lite Plus are for cats up to 33 lb, the Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro up to 30 lb, the Litter-Robot 4 and PetSafe SmartSpin up to 25 lb. Most CATLINK and PETKIT models stop at 22 lb.
Is there a good self-cleaning litter box under $200?
In our check, four were at $200 or less on November 7, 2026: PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Classic ($99.95), CATLINK Scooper Open-X ($199) and PETKIT Purobot Crystal Duo and PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Plus ($199.99 each). Three of the four run on their maker's crystal trays: about $298 a year for PetSafe's, $162 a year for PETKIT's [calc].
What does reddit say about self-cleaning litter boxes?
We do not quote forums or reviews. What we can add from the brands' own pages: Petlibro, for one, advises placing the new box next to the old one and turning automatic cleaning off for the first few days, and the stores we read give 30 to 90 days to return a device (Petlibro's Luma: 90 days, PetSafe: 45 days).
