The price tag is the easy part. What a self-cleaning litter box really costs is the box plus whatever it makes you buy again, at the pace its maker tells you to. We took four very different boxes, priced each refill from the brand's own store on November 7, 2026, and counted three years for one cat.

Units are fractional because we spread each pack over the days it lasts instead of rounding up to whole packs. The Petlibro Luma carries three refills: liners (one every 7 days, the low end of Petlibro's "once every 7 to 10 days"), a carbon deodorizer and a litter mat, both "about every 3 months for single-cat homes". Neakasa's bags are counted at 10 days, the low end of its "10-14 days per bag".

What drives the yearly cost

Every box, sorted by 3-year cost

The full table, with the refills behind each total, is on the best self-cleaning litter box. Your own numbers, with two cats or a faster pace: the 3-year cost calculator.

What we leave out

Ordinary litter (you already buy it, and brands publish no consumption figure we could use), electricity, sales tax and shipping (free on most of these stores for the box itself; Petlibro adds $20 for Luma deliveries to four New England states and does not ship it to Alaska or Hawaii).

Frequently asked questions

How much does a self-cleaning litter box cost?

To buy, $99.95 (PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Classic) to $999 (Litter-Robot 5 Pro) in our November 7, 2026 check, with a median of $399.99 [calc]. To run, from about $7 a year in waste bags (PETKIT Purobot Max 3, one $0.30 bag per 15 days) to about $298 a year in crystal trays (PetSafe, one a month) for one cat [calc].

How much does a Litter-Robot cost per year?

After the box, Whisker's own intervals give about $97 a year for one cat: a liner a week ($0.70 each in the 50-pack, $36.50 a year) and a carbon filter a month ($5 each in the 6-pack, $60.83 a year) [calc]. Whisker+ is optional at $79.90 a year. Whisker also says you can use any bag that fits instead of its liners.

Are crystal litter boxes cheaper?

Cheaper to buy, dearer to run. PetSafe's Crystal Classic is $99.95, but at one $24.50 tray a month the trays cost about $298 a year [calc], so it overtakes a $699 Litter-Robot 4 (about $97 a year in liners and filters) within three years: $994.08 against $991.00 [calc].

Does the cost double with two cats?

Brands do not say. Whisker writes that two average-sized cats typically need a liner "twice per week" against once for one cat, which is double. Petlibro says multi-cat homes "will need more frequent changes". Set the pace to 2 in the calculator if you assume use doubles: that is our assumption, labeled as such.
